Activities provided by CRUMA and its location.
 
Cruma is a unique centre for the recovery of sea and aquatic animals in Livorno, Italy.
As You can understand  from its name the centre is established to provide shelter and recovery to sea and aquatic  animals. Cormorants, herons, shearwaters, ducks, seagulls, swans and wading birds are only a few of the many sea and aquatic species that can be cured in the centre together with more commom birds such as blackbirds, magpies, jackdaws, crows and starlings that can be looked after at our centre.
We can also cure small mammals: hedgehogs, squirrels, foxes and bats are given food and care in order to be recovered and freed.
Every year more than 3.000 animals arrive in the centre; they have been  victims of firearms, poisoning, traumas caused by collisions, smear, pathologies. They may also be common chicks needing special care during the growth.
CRUMA works as a hospital and is provided with a reception, an operating theatre, postoperative stables, incubators, boxes and aviaries to help the birds fly, and pools for sea animals.

The Centre

The centre is equipped for the cure and recovery of wild birds, particularly of the sea and aquatic species. The centre is provided with a visit centre with a little shop run by LIPU, a surgery with stables, cages,incubators for the youngest birds and an operating theatre.
The internal facilities have been created to keep the animals during a postoperative period or those that are undergoing  a treatment until they have made a recovery.
After the cure we start a rehabilitation period outside the building. For this important, difficult activity we have  put up three aviaries with pools for the biggest aquatic birds, and many boxes for smaller animals. After being cured outside the patients are ready to be freed and they can  resume their normal life.
 

What CRUMA can do

The centre can house any kind of wild bird. After the cure the birds are reintroduced in the most suitable environment fot the species. The centre can also house small mammals like hedgehogs,bats,squirrels and foxes. The admission and cure of the animals is free, but the centre is a voluntary organization and can operate thanks to the contributions given by the  private citizens who leave the animals to be cured at the centre.

What CRUMA can't do

The centre can' trescue animals on behalf of common citizens.This means that the animals must be carried to CRUMA by the citizens themselves. There is no point in calling us and ask to come and get the animals: we aren't allowed by the law (and by our means) to do that.
The centre can' t admit exotic species such as parrots, dwarf rabbits ,american terrapins; we can only admit wild animals.
For exotic or domestic animals You can consult a Vet because every animal that is admitted to our centre will be later sent free. Obviously, You can' t send free exotic or domestic animals; they would die or cause serious problems to the environment. Besides, we have no other legal permission except for the rules established for our Centre; we can' t be of help in case You complain that pigeons or seagulls have settled your roof... we can' t do anything for You !!!
 
Educational activities at CRUMA

Cruma is an official centre approved by many Italian Universities to carry out training courses (also post graduate training) for the study of veterinary and zootechnical science.
At Cruma we can also carry out training courses for foreign students or young graduates.
 
Voluntary activities at CRUMA

Anyone who wants to volunteer can join us at the Centre; the only restriction imposed is that You must be over 21.
If You want to volunteer You should follow a short educational in-service course so that the Centre can evaluate Your aptitude for working with animals.
 
How to get to the Centre
 
By car: take the A12 ( Genova -Rosignano ) motorway as far as Livorno. Follow "Livorno centro" direction.
Leaving the linking clearway(Livorno-centro direction ) You reach a roundabout: follow the direction Collesalvetti-SS 206. After 1.5Km-drive You reach our centre in the Cisternino area.In front of Cruma there is a large parking area.
